Having a first aid kit in your car is not just a formality, but an important part of road safety. A traffic accident, a sudden deterioration in a passenger's well-being, or even a simple scratch — all these situations require prompt first aid. Therefore, it is important to understand what should be in a car first aid kit, how to assemble it correctly, and how to use it.

Why should there be a first aid kit in a car

A car first aid kit is a mandatory item in a car in accordance with the traffic rules of Ukraine, as well as a means that can save lives. In cases of injury, bleeding, or unconsciousness, the first few minutes are crucial. Properly assembled medical supplies can stabilize the condition of the victim until the ambulance arrives. In addition, a first aid kit demonstrates the driver's responsibility to themselves, their passengers, and other road users. It is a simple but effective step towards reducing risks on the road.

Basic list of essential medicines

The first aid kit should contain items for stopping bleeding, disinfecting wounds, applying bandages, and providing first aid for burns or injuries. According to regulations, the first aid kit should contain:
  • Sterile bandages (at least 3 pieces);
  • Wipes (antiseptic, sterile);
  • Tourniquet to stop bleeding;
  • Adhesive tape (bactericidal and regular);
  • Antiseptics (alcohol solutions or chlorhexidine);
  • Scissors and gloves;
  • Eye wash;
  • Painkillers (in capsules or ampoules);
  • Burn treatment;
  • Protective mask or cloth for artificial respiration;
  • Thermometer.

Kit No. 1

This option is suitable for drivers who use their cars for personal trips within the city.
  • Required items:
  • 3 sterile bandages of different sizes;
  • 1 tourniquet to stop bleeding;
  • Wound dressings (5 pieces);
  • Antiseptic plasters, roll;
  • Rubber gloves;
  • Antiseptic (spray or solution);
  • Painkillers;
  • Protective mask.
All these items allow you to provide first aid for minor injuries, minor bleeding, or dislocations. This kit is compact and does not take up much space in the car, making it convenient for everyday use.

Kit No. 2

The extended first aid kit is ideal for drivers who often travel outside the city or transport passengers, especially children. It is worth taking care of additional safety: for example, renting a child car seat to protect the youngest passengers. What's included:
  • 5 sterile bandages;
  • 5 wound dressings;
  • 2 tourniquets (main and spare);
  • 2 pairs of gloves;
  • Burn treatment products;
  • Alcohol wipes;
  • Medical scissors;
  • Tweezers;
  • Anti-allergy medication;
  • Anti-vomiting and fever-reducing medication;
  • Thermometer;
  • First aid instructions.
This first aid kit allows you to provide assistance in moderate situations — significant bleeding, burns, bites, allergic reactions. It provides confidence on the road, especially when traveling with children or in conditions of limited access to medical facilities.

What else can be added to the first aid kit

Additional but desirable components of a car first aid kit include:
  • Insect bite remedies;
  • Ammonia;
  • Anti-nausea remedies;
  • Sterile water or saline solution;
  • Individual medications (if any of the passengers have chronic illnesses);
  • Elastic bandage;
  • Blood-stopping powder or spray.
An extended first aid kit will be indispensable during long trips, camping, or outdoor recreation. It allows you to respond to a wider range of situations, including allergic reactions, headaches, or intestinal disorders.

Contents of a car first aid kit in the European Union

In the EU, the contents of a first aid kit are regulated by the DIN 13164 standard. It is stricter than in Ukraine and is mandatory for all drivers. For example, according to the regulations, a first aid kit must contain:
  • 2 tourniquets;
  • 14 wipes;
  • 4 bandages of different sizes;
  • Medical gloves;
  • Plasters in various forms;
  • A thermal blanket;
  • First aid instructions;
  • A face mask for artificial respiration.
When traveling abroad, especially in a rental car, it is worth checking in advance that your first aid kit complies with European requirements.

Rules for using a car first aid kit

A car first aid kit should be easily accessible, so it is best to keep it in the glove compartment or under the seat. The driver should know:
  • How to apply a tourniquet to stop bleeding (for a maximum of 1–1.5 hours).
  • How to treat a wound with an antiseptic and apply a sterile bandage.
  • How to provide first aid in case of loss of consciousness or convulsions.
  • How to use napkins and bandages for cuts and bruises.
In addition to theory, it is advisable to take a basic first aid course or watch instructional videos. Practical skills are the best preparation for emergencies.

Expiration date

One of the most important aspects when choosing and checking a car first aid kit is the expiration date of its contents. Expired medications or materials may not only lose their effectiveness but also pose a threat to the health of the victim. Each product has its own shelf life: antiseptics, painkillers, antiallergic and antipyretic agents usually have a shelf life of 2 to 5 years. Check each item in the first aid kit individually. Sterile materials (bandages, wipes, plasters) also have a shelf life. Once this has expired, they are no longer sterile and it is dangerous to use them. Once opened, many items have a shorter shelf life (for example, saline solution or antiseptic in an open bottle is only usable for a few days or weeks, depending on the conditions). Storage conditions affect quality: high temperatures in the car in summer or severe frost in winter can spoil some medicines even before their expiration date. Therefore, it is best to store the first aid kit in a cool, dark place in a closed container. It is recommended to check the first aid kit at least once every six months. Replace all items that have expired or are about to expire. This is especially important for first aid kits that have never been used — their contents may appear complete but may no longer be usable.

What to look for when buying a car first aid kit

When choosing a first aid kit, consider the following:
  • Contents — are all first aid items included?
  • Manufacturer — give preference to trusted brands;
  • Quality of packaging — the first aid kit must be hermetically sealed;
  • Availability of instructions;
  • Expiration date of medical supplies;
  • Compliance with applicable standards.
Also remember: first aid kits purchased “at the market” or in dubious stores often do not meet standards.

Can you be fined for not having a first aid kit?

Yes, in Ukraine, not having a first aid kit is a violation of traffic rules. The police have the right to issue a warning or impose a fine in accordance with Article 121 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. In addition, the driver may fail a technical inspection or be found guilty of negligent attitude towards passenger safety.
